Military Uniforms Top 20 list

The Late Assyrian Heavy Infantryman (Assurbanipal's reign)

Illustration by Lamont W. Harvey Assyrian Heavy Foot

Functional and stylish without looking soft like the more ornate Eastern uniforms.

Armor: The harshness of the metal scale armor contrasted with the quilted leg armor, stylish tunic wrap and tassels.

Boots: Leather knee-high boots were tough looking and afforded protection when on horseback. Early laces were nice, especially when most ancient soldiers were still wearing sandles, which looks suspect to the modern western viewer.

Helmets: The reinforce pointed helmets were good for deflecting blows and some had the crests.

Shields: The unique concave reiforced metal body length sheilds were preferable to the wooden shields.

Hairstyle: The long ferocious beards grown by the Assyrian warriors complete the look. Just run when you see them!

The Marian Roman Legion-
naire from the Late Republic

Illustration by Lamont W. Harvey Roman Legionaire

Less attract-
ive looking, but it embod-
ied the classic unglam- Armor: The famous banded armor afforded maximum protection while allowing freedom of movement. It was affordable especially when dictators in the Late Republic agreed to pay the cost in return for 16-20 years service.

Armaments: Among the best in history, the pilumn throwing spear which had a heavy handle and a point meant to penetrate an enemies shield and bend to render the spear and shield useless. The gladius short sword was perfect for close quarters fighting.

Helmets: Distinctive though not very attractive. Shields: Did the job, who else in history had formations called tortoise and rode chariots on top of formations.
